godstaff:

Having everything doesn’t include Lois.

I was re-reading Alan Moore’s “For the man who has everything”, illustrated by Dave Gibbons (which I highly recommend), and couldn’t help but notice that in Superman’s black mercy induced “happy and perfect” fantasy there was no trace of Lois Lane. Okay, you may argue that it took place in Krypton, but still, his wife, Lyla, bears no resemblance whatsoever with Lois, not the hair color, nor her occupation, nor even her aspirations. While Lois would never, ever, give up her journalistic career, Lyla was more than happy to withdraw from an acting profession to a homemaker, mother of two, life.

When liberated from Mongul’s scheme and have him defeated, one of the first things Superman does is make a pass at who?, yes, Diana.
I believe that says a lot about the idea of the “inevitable”, “predestined” and “immortal” romance between Clark and Lois DC had back then.

By the same time “Superman III” hit the theatres (Lousy movie in which funny man Richard Pryor wasn’t funny at all), in it you can see Lois as part of the background, with almost no intervention in the plot, other than being jealous of Lana Lang, real love interest of Supes in the movie.

It seems to me that DC people were a little fed up with Lois Lane and wanted to try other things for Supes.

Then, of course, came the nineties and the preposterous idea of marrying them, which led to Clark’s emasculation.

About “For the man…”, among the many good things it has going for it, My favorite are:

Diana’s bravery.

No Batman superhuman prowesses.

Robin (Jason Todd) saves the day.

Superman gets to land a myriad of punches in Mongul’s face.

Krypton’s utopian society gets questioned for the first time.

No Lois Lane.
