Q:What do you think of the idea that Wonder Woman is simply being used as a plot device to facilitate more drama in the love triangle between herself, Lois, and Clark? I was excited for him and Diana to be together, but after Superman #13 (I mean, Lobdell reportedly said one of the reasons Clark quit was because of his strong feelings for Lois) it seems that DC is just using Wonder Woman as a stand in to keep tensions high before they pair Clark with Lois once again.
According to Matt Idelson, Superman editor, when he was recently asked, the Superman/Wonder Woman relationship is not a gimmick. He claimed DC wanted to explore Lois and Clark with other people and see where it took them. He did admit it was more dramatic that way.
While you could be right, we really don’t know. Chances are DC are ‘using’ Diana , not for drama but SALES. Drama would have easily been gotten using a character from Superman’s own mythology or created one. But DC do seem to understand that there is an audience for Clark and Diana as there is for Clois. They might be trying to milk both fandoms.
It is an odd sort of admission as well if they are using Diana while Lois is THE ONE for him. Because if they felt that strongly, then they ought to have gone with Lois. By not starting with Lois, and not wanting to do the same thing again, says to us they acknowlegde the enthusiasm for that story of Lois/Clark is not as great as it was and it is too predictable. As seen with the sales of JL#12 we would say readers ARE interested in the Superman/Wonder Woman budding romance because it brings something new and chances for different stories.
Justice League #13 has shown that romance is in its fledgling stage. It has yet to be resolved. The two protagonists are still at the will they, won’t they stage. They are still debating the kiss. The jarring thing in all this is, we are not sure where Clark is at in this issue of Superman #13 in regards to what went down with Diana in JL#13. Did it happen as yet? Him having a crush on Lois is not something to alarm those of us who want to see him progress in a relationship with Diana. It’s how that is handled by writers. People have crushes all the time and they move on with their lives. Can Clark move on? Diana was with Steve for a while and seemed to have done so.So it can be shown while you can care for someone, sometimes they are not quite right for you or timing is off etc. We’ve seen it with Clark and Lana in the past. Even Clark and Diana.Recall, Clark had a huge crush on Diana back in the 80ties way before he even started to have feelings for Lois in the 90ties.
The problem we think would be if the Superman writers undermine the Clark/Diana relationship if/when they get together by pushing Clark wants Lois subtext in the book. That would be unfortunate because then they would be using Diana and Clark would come across as a bit of an asshole. If he really wanted Lois, least have the decency to go and tell her how he feels. Don’t be dishonest and pursue something with another while mooning after Lois. And to be honest, there has been very little chemistry between Lois and Clark, so not sure what tension they want to keep.
We need to READ Superman #13 first before we jump to conclusions, and give Lobdell a chance to tell his story. However, if shippers get the impression that DC are not being fair or exploring the relationship because they intend to push Clois, then we’d say stick to Justice League. As shippers we will love our pairing no matter if DC pushes Clois. Heck, haven’t we been doing that all this time? Even before we knew of the relaunch and he was married to Lois?
Bottom line. Support the books that give our pairing a chance/writes them well.If and when it goes back to Clois to…you know what to do. The choice is yours. We not only want Clark/Diana to be written well but we want Superman to be written well in his own books.
